Mumbai - June 16th, 2011 - NAVTEQ, the leading global provider of maps, traffic and location data enabling navigation, location-based services and mobile advertising around the world, announced today it will open a second production facility in Mumbai, India. Leveraging the success of the existing production centre in India, NAVTEQ plans to increase global production capacity to enable the company to rapidly expand coverage and create new and innovative products for local, regional and global markets. With a workforce of over 600 workers at the current facility, NAVTEQ expects to employ similar numbers when the second centre opens.
NAVTEQ considers India to be strategically important from both a market and an operational perspective. “The current R&D and production facilities in Mumbai have exceeded our expectations,” stated Kapil Chhabra, director, India production centre, NAVTEQ. “The second production centre in India will allow us to expand capacity and improve efficiencies. The advanced lean manufacturing techniques employed at both facilities are fundamental to providing the high quality map data that our customers require worldwide, as well as in India.”
NAVTEQ is committed to accelerating both short-term and long-term global production capacity to help accommodate rising industry demand. A demand that is growing both within India as well as globally. Earlier this year, NAVTEQ revealed results from an annual survey on the State of Navigation survey done in India. Respondents in India who were familiar with navigation was almost 70% while those who have “used” navigation was just 17%, signifying huge potential for growth in navigation usage among consumers in India. In addition, India already had one of the higher percentages of those respondents reporting regular use of mobile/smartphone navigation at 45% (“regular” being defined as daily or at least 1-2 times a week). Given this anticipated growth in local and global demand, NAVTEQ’s focus remains on meeting that interest in navigation usage with quality digital map data and location content.
Since the inaugural opening of the first production facility in Mumbai, NAVTEQ had rapidly achieved a critical growth of its overall coverage and content to be one of the largest Map content providers in India. In addition to its production centres, NAVTEQ has a fleet of dedicated field vehicles supported by hundreds of on-the-ground geographical analysts devoted to collection and processing of the NAVTEQ map across 20 cities in India. These field teams utilise the same processes and tools leveraged by NAVTEQ geographic analysts around the world. This in-depth “local expertise” delivers data consistent with real world conditions and results in a multi-faceted and comprehensive product. To date, there are approximately 22 million miles (or more than 35.2 million kilometers) of roadway represented in the NAVTEQ database globally.
